Fatal high-speed accident
Commercial flights at Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field were temporarily canceled due to a motor vehicle accident early this morning, Friday, May 20andwhich caused serious injury to the driver and passenger.
The City’s communications office says:
At approximately 3 a.m. this morning, the driver of an extremely high-speed eastbound vehicle on Washington Avenue was unable to maintain control of the vehicle in the 24-hour curve.and Avenue …. the vehicle veered off the road, struck two power transformers and finally crashed into the air traffic control tower a few feet off the ground. A tire that had separated from the vehicle struck the control tower approximately 15 feet above the ground.
The passenger and driver were both taken to hospital with serious injuries, with the driver sustaining life-threatening injuries. The Yakima Police Department announced this afternoon that the driver died. The passenger’s condition is not known at this time.
Commercial flights are now resuming
UPDATE: Commercial flights will resume tonight at Yakima Air Terminal-McAllister Field, but the airport’s air traffic control tower is closed due to damage it sustained in this car crash.
Yakima communications director Randy Beehler said FAA inspectors have determined the control tower cannot be occupied at this time because the structural support beams inside were damaged when a vehicle hit the tower.
Even if the tower is not accessible, flights can resume at the airport, … Pilots can announce their position by radio. They are trained to use an airport even without the help of air traffic controllers
Power was restored around 2 p.m. today. The timeline for restoring full operations at Yakima Airport is unknown at this time.
