WAITE PARK – Police Chief of Waite Park Dave Bentrud plans to retire next year.
Bentrud says he informed the city council of his decision over the summer, to give them enough time to figure out how to proceed.
He says after 30 years in law enforcement, he is excited about the next chapter in his life.
I have been blessed. I enjoyed this career and I wish I could do it longer. It felt like I wanted to give myself the opportunity to do something different, and I do, I wanted to give myself enough time.
Bentrud says it has been amazing to see the change within the department as it has grown from a staff of 12 almost 15 years ago to a staff of 30 today.
He says that while he will miss working alongside such an incredible team, he knows the community will remain in good hands.
The vast majority of the police officers we have in Waite Park, I was involved in hiring them. The supervisors that we have, I participated in their promotion. To have seen how they have grown up is very gratifying.
Bentrud says he wants to stay involved with many of the boards and organizations he is currently on.
He says it’s unclear if the city is considering promoting from within or looking to hire, but those conversations are ongoing.
Bentrud says that while an official day of retirement has yet to be determined, he is planning somewhere in May 2023.
