John “Jack” Mathine – Pipestone County Star


John “Jack” Mathine, 84, Pipestone, died Thursday, March 10, 2022 at his home.

The Christian Burial Mass was held Friday, March 18 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Gérald Kosse officiating.

The pallbearers were John Blue, Michael Wussow, Seth Erickson, Mike Delvaux, Lance Larson and Skylar Cottrell.

Military honors were provided by Michael Boock American Legion Post 6, Pipestone.

Interment took place at St. Leo’s Catholic Cemetery in Pipestone.

John “Jack” Raymond Mathine was born on May 29, 1937 to John and Elizabeth (Tharnish) Mathine in Creighton, Neb. He attended school in Creighton at St. Ludger’s School. He graduated in 1955 and began working for a time at the Richling gas station. In the fall of 1956, he enlisted in the US Army. He received basic training at Fort Chaffee, Ark., then served in France for a year at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE). After being honorably discharged, he worked for Leonard Meyer in Appleton. It was there that he met his future wife, JoAnn Kellen. The two were married on November 11, 1961, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.

Jack worked for Leonard for about a year on the Meyer farm. The couple later moved to Pipestone and Jack worked for the Peavey Co. There he worked making animal feed and handling grain, fertilizer and chemicals. He worked as a second man and salesman for the next 30 years until the elevator burned down. Then he went to work for Pipestone Grain and retired in 2012.

He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also helped as a communion minister. He was also a member of the Lions Club and helped distribute Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, Pipestone; five daughters, Diane (Michael) Wussow, Pipestone, Linda Blue, Hartford, SD, Barbara (Kenneth) Cloyd, Temecula, CA, Christine Mathine, Pipestone and Deborah (Mike) Delvaux, Yankton, SD; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six siblings, Betty (Dave) Walton, Franklin, Neb., Norma (Don) Hart, Creighton, Neb., Bob (Darlene) Mathine, Champaign, Ill., Jerry (Rita) Mathine, Glidden, Iowa, Judy Weibelhaus , Fort Scott, Kan., and Pat Kuhlmen, Bloomfield, Neb., And many loving friends and family.

His parents predeceased him; two sisters, Mary Lou Havercamp and Roseline Fredrickson and three brothers, Jim, Dale and Leonard Mathine.
