The third time IS the charm of Gilbertsville-Mount Upton which has just won, for the third year in a row, a 2020-2021 School of Distinction Award from CFES Brilliant Pathways.

CFES’s Brilliant Pathways works with schools to help students from low-income and underserved communities find their own “bright paths” on their way to college and their careers. This organization provides educators with tools to overcome these barriers and create an academic culture in their classrooms.

The 2020-2021 CFES Brilliant Pathways School of Distinction Award was presented to GMU Director Heather Wilcox and School Trustee Lisa Ruland at the 30th Annual CFES Global Brilliant Pathways Conference in October in Lake George. During the conference, Wilcox gave a presentation titled “Building and Strengthening Your Mentorship Program” which focused on connections, strategies and resources that schools can use to start or improve mentoring programs. This program started in the 2018-2019 school year pairs each student in grades PK through 5th with a student mentor in grades 6 through 12. Once a week, student mentors work with the youngest student they are paired with on social and life skills. skills.

Does this mentorship program work? Maybe that speaks for itself? According to publicschoolreview.com, the latest information from this year indicates that GMU’s 90% graduation rate has increased from 80% to 89% over five school years. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the teacher-student ratio is 1:10.

Congratulations to GMU for this incredible achievement in these difficult times. To learn more about what GMU does, visit them at www.gmucsd.org.
