The All Progressives Congress (APC) nominating committee has cleared Federation Attorney General Abubakar Malami to challenge Kebbi’s 2023 gubernatorial election.
A document seen by Peoples Gazette conveyed Mr Malami’s clearance to run, sparking controversy in the political sphere as the AGF had already withdrawn its gubernatorial ambition, in order to retain his ministerial appointment.
President Muhammadu Buhari issued a directive last week ordering all political candidates to resign before running in the next general election.
It is unclear whether Mr Malami tendered his resignation to pursue his political quest as per Mr Buhari’s directive or whether he was awaiting the Supreme Court‘s interpretation of the controversial Article 84(12) of the Elections Act of 2022.
The Gazette could not immediately reach Mr. Malami for comment as his line and that of his spokesman, Umar Gwandu, were unreachable at the time of this report.
A string of political appointees have sparked public outrage after going against political norms to seek elective office without resigning.
